Everyone knows that moving home is one of the most stressful time in anyones life. It can also be a pretty expensive affair. So why pay the expert movers to move things you’ll never use or need of?
We talked to our crews in Dumfries, Blackburn and Edinburgh to discover exactly what items people regret moving, and wished they’d left behind before moving home, or put into storage. When you get rid of the excess, you’ll be surprised how little there is to move. Not only will this save you money, but it will cut down on the packing time too!Â

02 - Old Furniture
Nothing breaks a removal man’s heart more than lifting a couch that will never be sat on.
Ok, so you’ve bought the new house, done all your room measurment, but will all your furniture fit in? If not, then it’s time to get rid of that old lazyboy or 3 piece suite, or else it will end up in the garage for another few years.
Head over to Facebook Marketplace and put your old sofa up for sale. Be sure to mark it as collection only, or youll be inundated with messages asking you to deliver it!Â

03 - Old Clothes
Ah, the 80s, before the internet when multi-colour shell suits were all the rage!
(Un)Fortunately, the 80s fashion style seems to have dropped out of style and shows no signs of making a comeback. So why are you keeping a whole host of clothes you’ll never wear?
We often find one of the crucial things people regret moving home with are their old clothes. That prom dress you’ll never fit into again? Sell it! Those cowboy boots you can only get into after a few pints? Burn them!Â
Not only will you save time and space for moving home, your wallet or purse might be a bit heavier if you manage to sell some of it. Why not try the most popular second hand clothing app, Vinted?
04 - Old Paint
Old paint tins, the scurge of any modern home. I’ll bet you’ve got a few tins of old paint hidden in the garage or shed!
Unfotunately, here at Kenneth Hayton Removals, and the majority of BAR Storage members, we cannot store old paint. As a result, we recommend you take any old paint tins to your local recycling centre.
Trust us, there’s nothing worse than being asked to take old-mismatched paint tins, only to see them placed in the garage never to be moved again. Make the sensible choice and dispose of your old paint. You won’t need it at your new home, and your movers will thank you for not having to move pointless paint tins!
05 - Expired Products
When was the last time you sorted out your cupboards?
Our crews are great at what they do, and will pack almost anything, including all the old and expired tins of food and medicines!
Before you move home, we suggest a declutter to get rid of all the expired medication, and any out of date tins of food that have been sitting in the cupboard since your nan visited when you first moved in!
Toss those spices and toilietry products too! Expired face cream might age you instead of giving you that youthful look you desire!
06 - Old Linen
Did you know that towels and linen are only meant to last up to 2 years?
One of the most commonly overlooked items that people always regret taking for a house move is linen and towels!Â
Older textiles tend to last up to 10 years, but modern fabric and the harsh powders we wash them with reduce this down to around 2 years. How old are your bed sheets? It might be a good idea to get rid of the old bed sheets and get a brand new set for your brand new house.
Old towels that don’t quite dry like they used to? If you’ve tried reviving them with fabric softener to no avail, then get a new set of matching towels delivered to your new home instead!
07 - Baby & Kids Items
Now, we’re not suggesting you throw out all the sentimental baby items and clothes, but is there a need to keep them all?
Children grow up really fast, and they grow out of their clothes even quicker. If you haven’t already donated them to charity, then consider putting them all in a bag and exchanging them for money at your local clothing bank.
You may not get a lot of money in return for the clothes, but it will give you back valuable space and also reward you with more space for new clothes, not to mention making it easier for removal men as there will be less items to move.
08 - Duplicates
Remember when you lost the potato peeler so you bought another one? Why take both to your new home?
More often than not, you’ll find duplicates of items like peelers or wooden spoons. There’s no need to take both of the same item, so put all the duplicates into a box marked for donations instead! It’s better off being used by someone who can’t afford something new, rather than sitting in a box until the next move!
So, pick your favorite pizza cutter and donate the rest, it may not seem like a lot, but every little help when you’re moving home.
09 - Old Electronics
Did you know you’re potentially sitting on a gold mine?
Electronic reslling is now big business, with companies such as CeX offering you good money for your old electronics.
Got an old Samsung or Apple phone? Dig out the box and charger and see exactly how much you’d be offered to sell it online.
Although a bit more effort on your part, auction sites like eBay can net you even more money. Remember the old Gameboys or Nintendos you threw in a box in the attic? They’re potentially worth upwards of three figures on eBay, and even more if you find the right collector!
10 - Just in case!
Remember those old chargers you kept just in-case? Get rid of them!
There’s no point in keeping old electronics, or indeed, that vase the flowers came in, or that extra large cardboard box you thought might come in handy. If you’ve not used it in over a year, then get rid of it.
Most people have a drawer in their house for items such as this. Go through and try to match up any missing remotes or controls, but be ruthless and if you don’t need it, get rid of it!
All to often, our removal teams will come back to a customer who is moving again, and they still have unopened boxes in their attic from the last time they moved. So be strict with yourself and only take things you will definitely use in the near future.Â
Remember a declutter before you move will help you in the long run!
